Most beginners get ready to compete in Jiu-Jitsu and they have absolutely no idea what they’re signing up to do.
I know this because when I first started competing, my preparation (if you can even call it that) was complete guesswork. I did crash diets and made-up strength workouts, and I had no idea how to “peak” for a competition.
For most tournaments that I did, I’d have a bad performance the first time around and then generally would improve a lot with each ensuing attempt.
The first time I did an ADCC Trials, I lost in the second round. Then, the next time I finished in the top 4. These gradual improvements continued until I reached the top 4 in the ADCC Worlds last summer.
Similarly, I won an IBJJF no-gi world championship at purple belt despite not even winning the IBJJF New York Open a few months earlier.
