Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always been fascinated by ninjas, samurais, and traditional martial artists.

In particular, I’ve always been deeply curious about one samurai—Miyamoto Musashi.

Musashi struck a chord for me because he was a writer and a martial artist—just like me. He wore many hats. This is something that I think all martial artists should aspire to do.

Most people have heard of or read Musashi’s legendary book, The Book of 5 Rings, but Musashi’s second most famous work—The “Dokkōdō” or “The Way of the Ronin”—doesn’t get nearly as much love.

It’s a short piece, only 21 lines in total, but it packs a punch. I was looking over it the other day and thought it would be fun to write an article about how the principles of this legendary samurai code can be applied to BJJ training.
