Since I started competing in Jiu-Jitsu, just about every single weight cut has been easier than the weight cuts that I did in wrestling growing up.

However, my Jiu-Jitsu weight cuts have been way more interesting, because cutting weight as an adult comes with its own set of unique challenges.

Very few people willingly pay money to remove water from their bodies for a shot at a plastic medal, but that’s basically what I’ve done almost every month for the last 5 years.

In that time, I’ve lived through some pretty weird weight-cutting experiences, both in saunas, hotels, and even just random gyms in random cities all across North America.

Cutting weight for most Jiu-Jitsu events is a bit different from wrestling or MMA because you’re physically not able to cut as much weight due to the limited recovery time that the rules permit. Same day weigh-ins (or even IBJJF style weigh-ins—where you weigh in moments before your match) completely change the way an athlete has to approach their weight cut.

However, that doesn’t mean that weight-cuts for Jiu-Jitsu aren’t weird.
