When I started Jiu-Jitsu, I was 17.
I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my life and I thought that being a UFC fighter would be way more interesting than being an accountant or a salesperson or whatever “regular job” I’d end up with if I went down some alternate timeline for my life.
After getting really interested in Jiu-Jitsu, I realized that MMA was not the lucrative career I thought it was going to be and I also realized that I didn’t really want to get in a cage and fight people.
I was probably 22 when I realized I didn’t want to do MMA at all, but at 19, competing in Jiu-Jitsu became the center focus of my life. Everything I did was so that I could compete more in Jiu-Jitsu at a higher level.
For me, Jiu-Jitsu was first about competition.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that Jiu-Jitsu is not about the same things for everyone.
