
You need to be obsessed with having pretty Jiu-Jitsu.
I often hear black belts say that their favorite move is just “the one that works”. They’re so far removed from the artistry of Jiu-Jitsu that all they care about is effectiveness.
About doing the bare minimum.
Most people treat the sport like a street fight — they just want to get out alive.
It’s almost like you don’t want to think hard about your grappling and your performances on the mat (and we’ll talk more about that word in a moment).
The Jiu-Jitsu that will take the sport to the next level is not only effective but also pretty to look at.
Gone are the days when you could smash someone in half-guard and be watchable. Gone are the days when you could go a 15-minute match without taking a single shot and get invited back to a big show.
In the Jiu-Jitsu of the future, you need to be an athlete, a technician, a risk-taker, and an artist once.
That is the aesthetic grappler. That is the future of the sport.
